The legal threshold is set as three times the minimum level for exemption from healthcare cost-sharing (€8,500), which means:

👉 Consulates can and do ask for more. Some Italian consular posts apply thresholds in the region of €28,000 to €35,000, depending on the district, family size and the cost of living in the Italian region where you plan to settle. For professionals classified under ISCO-08 groups 25 (ICT professionals) and 133 (ICT service managers), three years of relevant experience acquired within the previous seven years is sufficient.

Pro Tip: Don't stop at the minimum. Reference letters from past employers or clients, copies of previous contracts, portfolios and technical certifications all make the file more convincing — and give the officer a reason to say yes rather than a reason to ask for more.

Pro Tip: You don't need the physical original of your degree to start the process. A clear copy is usually enough for apostille and sworn translation, but CIMEA and Declaration of Value take weeks. This is the single most common bottleneck in an Italy DNV timeline: start it first.

Requirement 3: Six Months of Previous Experience

Separate from the highly qualified requirement, the decree asks for at least 6 months of previous experience in the field of activity you intend to carry out remotely from Italy.

✅ Employees: employment contract or confirmation of employment letter, employment history statements, previous relevant contracts, last 12 months of payslips, relevant tax returns

Requirement 7: Accommodation in Italy

✅ Rental agreement registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate, or

✅ Property deed (with visura catastale), or

✅ Loan for free use agreement (comodato d'uso), where accepted by your consulate

Two possible routes

👉 Familiari al seguito (accompanying family members). The main applicant applies first; minor children can be included in that application. For a spouse, a clearance (nulla osta) must then be requested in person from the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione in Italy — which a delegate or your Legal Manager can do with a power of attorney — after which the spouse files their own family reunification visa application at the consulate.

👉 Family cohesion. Family members travel to Italy on a Schengen visa and apply for the residence permit from inside Italy, through the same KIT procedure used by the main applicant.

Important: Do not travel to Italy alone. If you enter the country without your accompanying family members, in particular your spouse, they may have to wait two years before becoming eligible for a family visa. Plan the applications together and enter as a family unit.

After Approval: The Residence Permit

Your visa lets you enter Italy; the permesso di soggiorno lets you stay.

Within 8 working days of arrival, go to a Poste Italiane office and request the residence permit KIT (the "kit giallo"), then submit it with:

• The completed KIT forms (black pen, block capitals, one letter per box)
• Colour copy of every passport page, including the Italy entry stamp
• Copy of the D visa
• Copy of the registered lease or property deed
• Copy of the signed health insurance policy
• Copies of your last 6 months of invoices or bank statements and your latest tax return
